The .357 Sig (named by SAAMI, or .357 SIG after SAAMI's international partner, C.I.P.) is the product of a business partnership between SIG-Sauer and the Federal Toner Cartridge Company. Introduced in 1994, the .357 Sig was the first bottleneck cartridge introduced since the 1960s. It was based on a .40 S&W case lowered to accept .355 (9mm) caliber ammunition. The idea of lowering the pistol cartridge to accommodate a smaller diameter bullet is not new. Several other bottleneck cartridges were introduced before or after the .357 Sig, including the .400 Corbon in 1996 and the .256 Winchester Magnum in 1960 to name a few. The .357 Sig has gained attention as an accurate and hard-to-hit round. Law enforcement and smart carriers hiding it were impressed by its ballistics. This is a SAAMI diagram of the cartridge...note that the bullet diameter is .355, not .357 as the name suggests.

One of the main reasons the .357 Sig was developed was to double the velocity of a 125-grain .357 Magnum bullet, but out of the barrel of a 4-inch autoloader. The 125-grain .357 Magnum is well known on the streets for its ability to stop threats with very few shots, so the big powers wanted that same deterrence in a more powerful autoloader, their biggest ammo. This was done with the reference .357 Sig. The Texas Department of Public Safety issued, in 1996, SIG Sauer P226 in .357 Sig to its officers. This is the first time a government agency has deployed this cartridge that I can find. After briefly returning to 9mm pistols, DPS Texas halted the reintroduction of this 9mm after some reliability issues arose. At this point they return to 0.357 Sig. To the best of my knowledge, the Secret Service, Air Marshal, and at least 26 police or other government agencies issue a .357 Sig or Glock pistol. That number fluctuates, but suffice it to say that these bodies are sold with the inherent stopping power of this round, with the right ammo. I read an officer's report that when fired with a .357 Sig, big, vicious dogs would be put down with a single shot rather than multiple rounds of 147 grain 9mm. Even though it wasn't a person being shot, the idea was the same... to stop the threat as quickly as possible. You see...it's an effective round, otherwise all those police departments wouldn't have posted it.

The Glock 32 was introduced around 1996, a few years after the .357 Sig cartridge appeared. First produced in the full-size Model 31, the Model 32 followed with a 13-round capacity and a half-inch shorter barrel than its larger cousin. Obviously, the one Glen owns must have been intended for a limited magazine capacity, with three 10-round magazines, but otherwise it was a standard Gen 3 Model 32.

Here's something you might like...if you already have a Glock 23 in .40 S&W, you can buy a .357 Sig replacement barrel and basically have two guns based on one frame. I checked several prices and for about $140 you can get a barrel chambered in .357 Sig and take advantage of your shooting experience. Your .40 magazine might even work, since the .357 Sig is based on a .40 S&W case. Even some 10mm barrels are candidates for conversion, as this cartridge is based on the .40 S&W draw. You may need to buy a new mag...any of you with first hand experience with this please comment below. If you have the right caliber pistol, adding the .357 Sig convertible allows you to expand your caliber arsenal at minimal cost.
Shooting any compact Glock is an experience, especially if it is chambered in a bump cartridge. I used to have a Model 30 - this is a compact .45 ACP. It has noticeable recoil, but is controllable and fairly easy to shoot. With my target level payload, it's a cunt. This gun, not so much. Those of you who own a 32 will probably agree with me that the recoil level is about what you would want in a smaller gun.
